2024-25 Concerto Competition

Sponsored by Soroptimist International of Anchorage / Barbara and Ed Dimock Art Scholarship

Purposes

The AYO Concerto Competition serves two functions to further AYO’s goal of building a community where music education and performance are valued and shared:

  1. Highlighting one instrumental soloist for performance with the Anchorage Youth Symphony during the season.
  2. Showcasing qualifying soloists in a public recital, held mid-year at an AYO venue.

Important Dates:

September 15, 2024 – Deadline to submit a REPERTOIRE EXCEPTION REQUEST (see Rule No. 3 below)
September 29, 2024 – ONLINE APPLICATION DEADLINE (see Rule No. 4 below)
October 26, 2024 – CONCERT COMPETITION AUDITION, 1:00 – 2:30pm (subject to change) (see Rule No. 6 below)

NOTE
: Any questions regarding the AYO Concerto Competition should be directed to the AYO Operations Manager at: OC@AlaskaYouthOrchestras.org

Rules

1. All decisions of the judges are final. The judges are selected by AYO Staff, in collaboration with the AYS Principal Conductor and AYS Coaches as applicable.

2. Eligibility: The Concerto Competition is open ONLY to current AYS musicians in grade 11 or 12 during the same season they are competing. (Proof of academic status may be requested). Previous AYO Concerto Competition Winners are not eligible to compete again.

3. Repertoire: Concerto Competition repertoire must be selected from the PRE-APPROVED REPERTOIRE LIST below. Should you wish to request an exception to the Pre-Approved list, you must submit it at least 2 weeks prior to the application deadline for approval
to OC@AlaskaYouthOrchestras.org (exception deadline: Sept. 15, 2024).

Repertoire Notes:
– You will prepare the fast (usually first) movement of a concerto, with cadenza if present. See the repertoire list below for more guidance.
– If the concerto has cadenzas, perform all cadenzas during the competition as well as performance.
– Participants must perform their piece memorized (without music) for both the competition and performance.
– Participants may compete on only one piece and one instrument for the AYS Concerto Competition.
– Pieces should be approximately 10 minutes in length. Participants may be allowed (pending approval) to perform two movements FROM THE SAME WORK if both movements together total 10 minutes (please request approval from AYO by the exception deadline above).

4. Application: All prospective competitors must submit an online application by the due date – Sept. 29, 2024.

5. Accompanist: You must arrange for an accompanist (at your own expense) during the live competition. Your accompanist may make judicious cuts in the orchestral (non-solo) passages. Accompanists are not judged.

6. Competition: The Competition will take place live at the AYO Office on Oct. 26, 2024. The audition is currently scheduled to take place from 1:00 – 2:30 pm (subject to change).

7. Recital: Those competitors not selected to perform with the Anchorage Youth Symphony in concert may be asked to perform with their accompanist in a public AYO recital, if their competition entry demonstrates excellent merit.

8. Winning: You will be expected to rehearse with the Anchorage Youth Symphony several times prior to the concert and should be prepared to do so at any regular AYS rehearsal during the second half of the year prior to the performance concert. Winners receive a $250 cash prize.

9. Limitations: You will perform only the work with which you competed. No substitutions will be allowed. Winners may not perform the same work with another Anchorage/Mat-Su area orchestra (unless for a school event) during the same concert season.
